Rhinoplasty Q & A

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes your nose to achieve better facial proportions. The surgery alters the placement and shape of the bone, cartilage, and skin of your nose to give you a new look. Often, the surgical changes are subtle, but the change in your appearance can be dramatic.

At West Shore ENT & Allergy, Dr. Bowen offers rhinoplasty as a cosmetic procedure to improve your appearance, while other members of the practice perform rhinoplasty for reconstructive purposes.

For example, if you have a deviated septum, the practice offers rhinoplasty to open your nose’s airways and help improve your breathing. Rhinoplasty has also been known to help some patients with allergies as it opens up airway passages for easier breathing.

Are you a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

Everyone’s nose and facial shape is different and rhinoplasties require an artistic touch in addition to professional medical expertise. Before scheduling your procedure, Dr. Bowen sees you for an initial consultation where he examines your nose and gets your complete medical history. (Please bring a full list of medications you’re taking to your appointment.)

During your consultation, Dr. Bowen discusses your concerns and goals for your new nose after which he makes recommendations about the best course of action for your rhinoplasty.

Even if you’ve had rhinoplasty done before, Dr. Bowen is experienced in revision rhinoplasty and can help repair an unsuccessful operation.

How long does it take to recover from rhinoplasty?

You receive a post-op checkup right after surgery, where Dr. Bowen checks how your nose is healing and makes sure your cast and sutures are in place. Patients experience swelling and bruising around the nose but this goes away in 7-10 days.

You might be in some discomfort right after the procedure, but if needed, Dr. Bowen helps you manage pain with medication.

After a week, Dr. Bowen sees you for a second post-op meeting and removes the cast and sutures. At this time, you can start getting back into your normal routine. Avoid exercising for another three weeks but talk to Dr. Bowen if you have any concerns.

It takes 1-2 years for your nose to completely heal from rhinoplasty, but after the new contour of your nose sets, the results are permanent.

If you’re having trouble with your breathing or you’re unhappy with the appearance of your nose, West Shore ENT & Allergy has a team of rhinoplasty experts who can help. Call the office or use the online tool to schedule your consultation today.
